THE TOUR
Paul Simon's Graceland Tour in 1987 was a historic and highly acclaimed concert tour that followed the release of his landmark album "Graceland." The tour played a crucial role in bringing South African music and culture to a global audience and remains one of the most significant events in the history of world music.
Paul Simon released his album "Graceland" in 1986. The album was a departure from his earlier work, incorporating elements of South African township music, mbaqanga, and isicathamiya. It received widespread critical acclaim and commercial success.
The tour faced controversy due to the cultural boycott of South Africa at the time because of apartheid. Some artists and activists called for a boycott of Simon's tour, arguing that it violated the cultural boycott. However, Simon maintained that he was collaborating with South African musicians to raise awareness of the apartheid issue.
The tour featured a diverse group of musicians, including South African artists such as Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Hugh Masekela, and Miriam Makeba. These collaborations helped introduce South African music to a global audience and provided a platform for South African artists to gain international recognition.
The Graceland Tour blended Western pop and rock music with African rhythms and melodies. This fusion of musical styles was groundbreaking and contributed to the album's and tour's immense success. The tour was a massive success, drawing large crowds and receiving positive reviews at each stop. It showcased not only the music but also the rich cultural tapestry of South Africa.
The Graceland Tour and album are considered pivotal moments in the world music genre. They helped break down cultural barriers and introduced millions of people to the beauty of South African music. The tour's success also contributed to the eventual end of apartheid in South Africa, as it raised awareness and brought international pressure on the apartheid regime.
Despite the controversy surrounding the tour's timing, Paul Simon's Graceland Tour 1987 is remembered as a musical and cultural milestone. It not only showcased the talents of the participating artists but also played a role in promoting social change and unity through music.
