A promotional interview distributed to promote a recording that may soon be commercially available or maybe just to get advance airplay to break a new band. Promos were normally sent directly to music stores, radio and television stations, music jouralists and critics in the hard copy format of CD, CDR or DVD.

Because promos were produced in small quantities only and differ from releases later made available to the general public, they are considered valuable collectors' items. Also, since the advent of broad-bandwidth Internet access, online promotional distribution of music has been established. Record companies make their promotional product available as audio/video files and use the Internet as the distribution channel and phased out hard copies by early 2000s thus adding to the rarity of early hard copy promos.
