THE TOUR
The Grateful Dead's "25 Years of Concerts" tour in 1990 was a significant milestone for the band as it marked their 25th anniversary since their formation in 1965 by Jerry Garcia.. This tour was a celebration of the band's long and storied career, and it featured a series of concerts throughout the United States.
One of the most notable aspects of the 1990 tour was the band's decision to perform without their iconic keyboardist, Brent Mydland, who had tragically passed away in July 1990. To fill the void left by Mydland's absence, the Grateful Dead recruited Bruce Hornsby as a temporary keyboardist. Hornsby brought his own unique musical style to the band and added a different dimension to their sound during this tour.
The tour featured a mix of Grateful Dead classics, improvisational jams, and newer songs from their 1989 album "Built to Last." The tour culminated in a series of concerts at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, New York, in March 1990, which were recorded and released as the live album "Without a Net."
The Grateful Dead's 1990 tour was well-received by fans and is often remembered as a significant moment in the band's history. It showcased their enduring appeal and ability to adapt to changing circumstances while continuing to deliver memorable live performances. The tour also marked the beginning of a new era for the band, as Brent Mydland's passing led to further lineup changes and musical exploration in the years that followed.
