The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) are a fictional quartet of teenage anthropomorphic turtles named after Italian Renaissance artists. Created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, they first appeared in a comic book in 1984. The turtles, trained in ninjitsu, are named Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, and Raphael. Living in the sewers of New York City, they battle petty criminals, evil overlords, mutated creatures, and alien invaders while attempting to remain hidden from society. Guided by their rat sensei, Splinter, the turtles are often assisted by the fearless reporter April O'Neil and the hockey-masked vigilante Casey Jones. Over the decades, TMNT has expanded into a hugely successful franchise, including animated television series, films, video games, toys, and a wide range of other merchandise, becoming an iconic part of popular culture.
