Original 1980 Version: In the original release of "The Empire Strikes Back" (1980), the holographic appearance of Emperor Palpatine was created using a composite of actress Marjorie Eaton’s face, chimpanzee eyes superimposed, and the voice of Clive Revill.

Special Edition and Later Releases: For the 2004 DVD release and subsequent versions, the scene was updated to maintain continuity with the prequel trilogy. Ian McDiarmid, who played Emperor Palpatine in "Return of the Jedi" and the prequel trilogy, was digitally inserted into the scene as the holographic Emperor. Ian McDiarmid also provided the voice for the updated version.
