Born in Greenville, Mississippi, Henson began experimenting with puppetry while attending high school in Maryland. He created his first Muppet character, Kermit the Frog, in 1955. The Muppets gained popularity through various television appearances, including "Sesame Street," which debuted in 1969, and "The Muppet Show," which aired from 1976 to 1981.
