The intensity of metal, the social commentary of rap and a plethora of influences – ranging from the band's Armenian heritage to jazz, Middle Eastern melodies and contemporary politics – helped make System Of A Down an international powerhouse.

The band's unique blend of musical and personal influences created such an explosive sound that producer Rick Rubin signed and produced the group as the first new act on American Recordings under a partnership with Columbia Records.

Between 2004 and 2005, System Of A Down recorded enough material for a double album, ultimately releasing it in two instalments six months apart. Mezmerize arrived in May 2005, followed by Hypnotize in November. Both albums topped the Billboard 200 and achieved platinum status, with Hypnotize serving as the band's final studio album to date and a fitting conclusion to one of modern metal's most influential catalogues.
