PRE-OWNED BOOK

DESCRIPTION
The Jazz Scene by Francis Newton is a landmark study of jazz, examining not only the music itself but also the musicians, audiences, record industry, clubs, fashions and social environment that helped shape its development. Originally published in 1959, this revised Penguin edition was issued in 1961 as part of the influential Penguin Specials series.

Francis Newton was the pseudonym used by distinguished historian Eric Hobsbawm for his jazz writing. A lifelong jazz enthusiast and critic, Hobsbawm adopted the name while writing about jazz for the New Statesman. The book explores the origins and development of jazz, its leading musicians and styles, the jazz business and the influence of jazz on popular and serious music.
