DESCRIPTION
Jazz: Its Evolution And Essence by André Hodeir is an influential critical and analytical study of jazz, examining the development of the music from its early forms through swing, bebop and contemporary jazz. Rather than concentrating solely on jazz history, Hodeir explores the musical qualities that distinguish jazz, including improvisation, rhythm, structure and individual performance styles.
Originally published in France as Hommes et Problèmes du Jazz, this 1956 English-language edition was translated by David Noakes and revised to include material on contemporary jazz. Hodeir was both a composer and jazz critic, giving the book a particularly detailed musical perspective on performers including Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and Charlie Parker.
