DESCRIPTION
A History Of Jazz In America by Barry Ulanov is a substantial study of the origins, development, musicians and major movements of American jazz. Ulanov traces the music from its early roots through New Orleans, swing, big bands and modern jazz, examining both the musicians and the social and musical forces that shaped the genre.

First published by The Viking Press in 1952, this 1954 second printing presents one of the important early comprehensive histories of American jazz. Ulanov was among the first generation of serious American jazz historians and critics, and the book remains an interesting period reference for collectors and students of jazz history.
