Thorin Oakenshield is a central character in J.R.R. Tolkien's novel "The Hobbit," published in 1937. Thorin is the leader of the company of dwarves that sets out on a journey to reclaim their ancestral home, the Lonely Mountain, from the dragon Smaug. The character's title, "Oakenshield," comes from an incident where he used an oak branch as a shield during the Battle of Azanulbizar.
In Peter Jackson's film adaptation of "The Hobbit" trilogy, released between 2012 and 2014, Thorin is portrayed by Richard Armitage.
