HISTORY OF PROMOS
A promo (promotional) is an audio or video recording distributed to promote an upcoming release or just to get advance airplay to break a new band. Promos were normally sent directly to music stores, radio and television stations, music journalists and critics in the hard copy format of CD, CDR or DVD and are therefore strictly limited in numbers and are valuable collectors items.
Promos were often distributed in plain packaging, without the text or artwork that appears on the commercial version. A promotional release may be standalone or be part of a press kit, which may include other items such as promotional photos, music videos, press releases, or biographies of the artists. Today, all promos are distributed in digital format and thus early hard copy promos are even more special.
