THE TOUR
The Communards were a British pop duo formed in 1985, consisting of Jimmy Somerville and Richard Coles. They took their name from the French republican revolutionaries who took control of Paris in 1871.
Jimmy Somerville was the lead vocalist of the Communards and was known for his distinctive falsetto voice. Before forming the Communards, Somerville was the lead singer of the band Bronski Beat, known for hits like "Smalltown Boy" and "Why?"
Richard Coles played the keyboards and provided backing vocals. He had a background in classical music before joining the pop music scene.
The Communards' music was a blend of pop, dance, and synth-pop with elements of disco and soul. Their sound was characterized by catchy melodies and Somerville's powerful vocals.
The Communards had several chart-topping singles, including their cover of Thelma Houston's "Don't Leave Me This Way," which became a massive hit in the UK. Other notable songs include "Never Can Say Goodbye" and "So Cold the Night."
The Communards disbanded in 1988, and Jimmy Somerville pursued a successful solo career, while Richard Coles shifted his focus to other interests. He was ordained in the Church of England, spending time as the curate of St Botolph's (The Stump) in Boston, Lincolnshire, and as assistant priest at St Paul's Knightsbridge and chaplain to the Royal College of Music. In 2011, he became vicar of Finedon in Northamptonshire.Â
