STORY BEHIND SMILE
"Smile" is an album by Brian Wilson, co-founder of the Beach Boys, that has an interesting and complex history. Initially conceived in 1966 and 1967 as a follow-up to the critically acclaimed "Pet Sounds," "Smile" was meant to be an avant-garde and ambitious project, pushing the boundaries of popular music with its intricate harmonies, innovative production techniques, and unconventional song structures.
The original "Smile" sessions were marked by Wilson's growing creative ambitions and the use of various unconventional recording techniques. It featured a variety of unconventional sounds and instruments, further pushing the boundaries of what was expected in pop music. Wilson worked closely with lyricist Van Dyke Parks on the album's complex and often cryptic lyrics, which drew upon a range of American themes and imagery.
However, the project became notorious for its troubled production. Wilson's mental health issues, coupled with internal band tensions, technical challenges, and pressure from their record label, led to the album being shelved indefinitely. Several of the tracks recorded during the "Smile" sessions were later reworked and released on subsequent Beach Boys albums, notably "Smiley Smile," but the original vision of "Smile" remained unrealized for decades.
In 2004, Wilson revived the "Smile" project. Collaborating again with Van Dyke Parks and with the support of a new band, he completed the album and released it as "Brian Wilson Presents Smile." This version was critically acclaimed, allowing fans and critics alike to finally hear Wilson's ambitious project as he had originally envisioned it, albeit nearly 40 years later.
The story of "Smile" is often seen as a poignant example of lost potential in the music world, reflecting Brian Wilson's genius as well as the challenges he faced.
