DESCRIPTION
Very rare vintage ticket stub for the Beatles Tuesday 16th June 1964 concert in Melbourne Australia.
The Beatles concert was held at 8.45pm at Festival Hall, Dudley Street, Melbourne.
This ticket was for Sec. 6, Seat P40.
Ticket measures 7 x 4.5cm (2 3/4 x 1 3/4 inches) and features the Beatles full name in attractive marquee style lettering.
What's particularly interesting about this concert is that it was the night that Ringo rejoined the band after being sick in hospital in England.
As a bit of back story, in June 1964, the Beatles were to tour Scandinavia, Holland, the "Far East' and Australia. On 3rd June, the day before the tour, Ringo collapsed at an early morning photo session for the Saturday Evening Post at a portrait studio in Barnes, London. He had a 102 degree fever and tonsillitis and was was rushed to the hospital.
While having his tonsils out in London, he was temporarily replaced for the Denmark and Holland concert dates by shy 24 year old session drummer Jimmy Nicol. Beatles producer George Martin suggested Jimmy because he had recently recorded at EMI with singer Tommy Quickly (a signing of Brian Epstein's) and he'd also recently become familiar with Beatles numbers while drumming on a recording session for an album called Beatlemania.
At first, George Harrison didn't want Ringo to be replaced and refused to go on the tour without him, but Epstein and Martin convinced him. Paul thought he was okay for the tour but not for any recording sessions. Epstein thought it was a good choice because he (Nicol) 'looked like a Beatle and not an outcast'.
During the tour, every time one of the Beatles asked Jimmy how he was getting on, if he was liking it and if he was managing okay, he only ever replied "It's Getting Better". The others used to make fun of this, and late in 1967, it inspired Paul to do a song called "It's Getting Better" on the Sgt Peppers album.
Ringo was discharged from hospital on 11th June, and he rejoined the group in Melbourne on 15th June, 1964 ready for their second Melbourne concert the following night (the night of this ticket!!)
Concert tickets are unique pieces of rock history. Framed together with other items we have on our website such as vinyl records, official stage guitar picks, autographs, drumsticks, backstage passes, tour programs and photos and you can create a truly one-of-a-kind unique piece of memorabilia.
CONDITION
This ticket is made from thick ticket stock and is in fantastic condition. It lies very flat and is clean apart from some smudging and a faint number written top right corner (probably a numbering system from the time of sale)
Actual images of item has been used.
